03rd June 2013
I am delighted that a total of 5 of my images have been placed in the 2012/13 Photo Contest awards - the world's largest on line Underwater Photography competition. The images below which were taken at Lundy Island and Misool, Indonesia scooped Gold and Silver Medals respectively in the Temperate Waters and Close Focus Wide Angle categories. Shots I took in Djibouti, Lundy Island and Capernwray also came in as Runners Up in the Sharks, Over/Under and Freshwater categories.

In addition, I was thrilled to achieve the accolade of Grand Master, an award made by the judges to denote Underwater Photographers of distinction. The judges commented as follows:-

"UK photographer Nick Blake becomes a Grand Master by building on his success in previous year with five placings this year including a Gold in the temperate waters category and a silver in the Wide Angle Close Focus. The latter was a tropical waters shot but we know Nick best for his temperate waters work, shot whilst diving around the UK. His usual environment is therefore a difficult one to work in, yet he always delivers the goods."

The competition was also widely covered in UK national and local media, with articles appearing in The Times newspaper, Daily Mail Online, Amateur Photographer, Woking Informer, North Devon Gazette and on The British Society of Underwater Photographers web site. Windermere Debris Dive 2013
03rd March 2013
Along with hundreds of divers from across the UK I travelled up to the Lake District on Saturday 2nd March to take part in this fantastic event. Organised by TV Presenter and Explorer Paul Rose, the dive for debris in the lake aimed to raise awareness of plastic pollution in our oceans. With over 250 divers in the water around the lake shore at the same time, around 7 tons of rubbish was removed by the end of the day, ultimately to be turned into art sculptures by local schools.

BBC TV were at the event and an opportunity came up which enabled me to take one of their Go Pro video cameras into the water to get some underwater footage for their feature. I was delighted to see that my attempts at video made it into the BBC Breakfast report. You can view the BBC coverage here: and coverage by the British Sub Aqua Club here:

Lundy and Farne Islands Seals
25th July 2012
June and July brought opportunities to travel to both the Farne Islands and Lundy Island to dive with and photograph Seals.

The Farne Islands are situated between two and five miles off the Northumberland Coast and the Grey Seal is a notable resident, with between 3000 and 4000 of this rare species on and around the islands. The colonies here are one of the most important in Europe, and this species of seal is the largest surviving carnivore in the British Isles, residing throughout the year.

Lundy Island lies off the coast of North Devon where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel and is home to a breeding colony of around 60 Grey Seals. In the summer months there are around double this number.

The portfolio can be found under "Underwater Photography" or alternatively click on the Seal image below to view the collection.

Following a recent trip with Martin & Sylvia Edge to photograph Whale Sharks in the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti I have added a portfolio of some of the images I took.

Djibouti is an exceptional area for observing whale sharks. Although they are generally solitary creatures, they congregate in the Bay of Tadjoura to feast on the high concentrations of plankton.
